[导读]2026 Mutianyu Great Wall One-Day or Two-Day Route Guide
Mutianyu is one of the best choices for international travelers who want a Great Wall trip that is scenic, well-restored, less rushed than Badaling, and suitable for families, couples, seniors, and private tours.
Before planning, remember three things: book with real passport information, arrive early, and choose the right way up and down the Wall. Mutianyu currently uses real-name ticket reservation, and visitors can reserve with valid ID or passport information; the official site also states that each ID/passport may buy one ticket per day.
Best For
| Traveler Type | Best Route |
|---|---|
| First-time visitors | Cable car to Tower 14, walk to Tower 15–20 |
| Families with kids | Cable car up and down |
| Seniors | Tower 14 easy route |
| Young travelers | Chairlift up, toboggan down |
| Photographers | Tower 14–20 route |
| Slow travelers | Two-day Mutianyu + village stay |
Key Opening Info
Mutianyu’s peak season is March 16 to November 15, with opening hours from 07:30 to 18:00 on weekdays and 07:30 to 18:30 on weekends. In the off-season, from November 16 to March 15, it opens from 08:00 to 17:30. Ticket sales stop one hour before closing, and admission stops 30 minutes before closing.
For a comfortable visit, arrive before 09:00 if possible. In summer, weekends, public holidays, and golden autumn weekends, late arrival usually means more queues, stronger sun, and less time on the Wall.
One-Day Route
Route 1: Classic Easy Route
Best for: first-time visitors, families, seniors, private groups, and travelers who want good views without too much physical pressure.
Suggested Schedule
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 07:00 | Depart from Beijing downtown |
| 08:30–09:00 | Arrive at Mutianyu Tourist Center |
| 09:00–09:30 | Ticket check, shuttle bus, cable car station |
| 09:30–10:00 | Take cable car to Tower 14 |
| 10:00–12:00 | Walk from Tower 14 toward Tower 15, 16, 18, or 20 |
| 12:00–12:30 | Return to Tower 14 |
| 12:30–13:00 | Cable car down |
| 13:00–14:00 | Lunch near Mutianyu village |
| 14:00–15:30 | Coffee, village walk, or return directly |
| 16:00–17:30 | Arrive back in Beijing |
The official recommended light route also uses the North Ticket Gate, cable car to the Tower 14 viewing platform, a short visit around Tower 15, and a return by cable car, making it suitable for travelers who prefer a lighter workout.
Why This Route Works
This is the safest and most balanced route. Tower 14 gives you direct access to one of the best photo sections. If your group is energetic, continue toward Tower 20 for stronger views. If you have children or seniors, stay around Towers 14–16 and keep the walk relaxed.
Route 2: Scenic Challenge Route
Best for: active travelers, hikers, photographers, and guests who want a stronger Great Wall experience.
Suggested Route
North Entrance Gate → Northern Wall Pathway → Tower 10 → Tower 14 → Tower 20 or Tower 23 area → return to Tower 14 → cable car down
The official “Extreme Challenge Route” starts from the North Entrance Gate, climbs through the northern pathway to Tower 10, continues to Tower 14, and then heads toward the highest accessible area before returning to Tower 14 for the cable car down.
Suggested Timing
Allow 3–4 hours on the Wall if you want to walk seriously, take photos, and avoid rushing. This route is not ideal for very young children, elderly guests with knee problems, or visitors coming in the hot midday summer sun.
Route 3: Toboggan Fun Route
Best for: young travelers, couples, friends, and families with confident older children.
Suggested Route
Chairlift up near Tower 6 → walk on the Wall → return to the chairlift/toboggan area → toboggan down
This route is more playful than the Tower 14 cable car route. It is great for travelers who want the famous Mutianyu slide, but it is less suitable for seniors, pregnant travelers, visitors with heart or blood-pressure conditions, or anyone uncomfortable controlling speed manually. Toboggan operation can also be affected by rain, snow, wind, maintenance, and queues, so keep it as a flexible option rather than the only reason for the trip.
Two-Day Route
Best For
A two-day Mutianyu route is better if you want a slower, more comfortable Great Wall experience instead of a rushed Beijing day trip.
It is especially suitable for:
Two-Day Plan A: Relaxed Family Route
Day 1: Beijing → Mutianyu Village
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Depart Beijing after breakfast |
| Late morning | Arrive in Huairou / Mutianyu village |
| Noon | Lunch at a local restaurant |
| Afternoon | Check in at hotel or guesthouse |
| Late afternoon | Easy village walk, coffee, countryside photos |
| Evening | Dinner and rest |
Day 2: Mutianyu Great Wall → Beijing
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 07:30–08:00 | Breakfast |
| 08:30 | Enter Mutianyu |
| 09:00 | Cable car to Tower 14 |
| 09:30–11:30 | Walk Tower 14–20 based on energy |
| 12:00 | Cable car down |
| 12:30 | Lunch |
| 14:00 | Return to Beijing |
Why This Route Works
You avoid the biggest weakness of a one-day trip: spending too much time in the car and rushing the Wall. Staying overnight near Mutianyu lets you enter earlier, walk with better energy, and avoid the worst midday heat in summer.
Two-Day Plan B: Great Wall + Huairou
Day 1
Beijing → Yanqi Lake / Huairou countryside → Mutianyu hotel
Use the first day for a light Huairou countryside experience: lake views, village dining, coffee, or a boutique hotel stay. Do not climb the Wall on the same afternoon unless your arrival is early and your group is energetic.
Day 2
Mutianyu Great Wall → lunch → return to Beijing
Choose either the easy Tower 14 route or the active Tower 14–20 route.
This plan is ideal for guests who want a Great Wall trip with better pacing, better meals, and a more premium private-tour feeling.
Which Route Should You Choose?
| Situation | Best Choice |
|---|---|
| First time in Beijing | One-day classic cable car route |
| Traveling with seniors | Tower 14 light route |
| Traveling with kids | Cable car up and down |
| Want the slide | Chairlift up, toboggan down |
| Want the best views | Tower 14 to Tower 20 |
| Want a slow premium trip | Two-day Mutianyu stay |
| Want photos with fewer people | Early morning, overnight nearby |
What Not To Do
Do not arrive after lunch in peak season.
Do not buy a cable car ticket and assume it includes the toboggan.
Do not choose the toboggan route for seniors or very young children.
Do not climb too far if you still need to walk back.
Do not forget your passport, because ticket reservation and entry are identity-based.
Do not plan a tight airport or train connection immediately after Mutianyu.
Best Final Recommendation
For most travelers, the best one-day route is:
Beijing → Mutianyu Tourist Center → Shuttle Bus → Cable Car to Tower 14 → Walk toward Tower 20 → Return to Tower 14 → Cable Car Down → Lunch → Beijing
For a more relaxed two-day route:
Day 1: Beijing → Huairou / Mutianyu village stay
Day 2: Early Mutianyu visit → Tower 14 route → lunch → Beijing
This gives travelers the best balance of scenery, comfort, time control, and safety.
